The Digital & Technology (D&T) Architecture team is growing rapidly and looking for talented colleagues to help deliver ambitious and market leading services that live up to Sainsbury's industry leading reputation.

The Architecture team enable the creation of new capability for the organisation, whilst managing the risk it presents. You will be working within the Retail and Logistics product family with a focus on application architecture. You'll be working closely and collaboratively with the Domain Architect from the creation of solution options and supporting the solution through the project lifecycle.

You'll be someone who loves to make things happen, who can communicate complex technical issues in a clear manner, who can work at the detailed level but also see the bigger picture, and be someone passionate about identifying and delivering simple solutions to complex problems.

As a member of the Architecture team at Sainsbury's, you will be a key part of shaping the future of the organisation and driving innovation in the retail sector.

  • To be responsible for the production of high quality, practical, flexible and detailed designs that are aligned to the Architecture principles, patterns and standards whilst progressing the overall business requirements
  • To be part of the delivery team in either a waterfall or agile project delivery
  • Works closely with Product Owners, Security teams, Service Operations and DevOps teams to support the smooth implementation of the solution as well as ensuring suitable support models
  • To Innovate and adopt new technologies and methodologies where appropriate
  • To act as a role model and mentor to more junior Designers within the team

    What I need to do

  • Supports a product family and Domain Architect through advising on, and creation of detailed technical designs and architectures to support projects and products
  • Apply technical knowledge to produce or support the production of creative yet practical designs that users can understand and operate, which can be implemented and rolled out
  • Working with the product family, ensure alignment to architecture standards & patterns, as well as progressing the IT Roadmap
  • Working within a product family to ensure designs meet the business requirements
  • Determine the correct sizing for the new solution
  • Work with the Service Operations teams to ensure adequate support and creation of robust implementation approaches
  • Inputs into the high-level time and cost estimates for the delivery of the technical elements of a project so that informed decisions can be made about the best way to deliver the required change
  • Creates appropriate Key Design Decisions (KDDs)
  • Actively progress the broader enterprise principles and actively considers applications or services that should be decommissioned
  • Ensures alignment with the Architecture through:
    - Quickly resolving or escalating any technical design issues that may arise during the development lifecycle, ensuring there is alignment with Architecture guidelines, so that development progress is not delayed
    - Working with development teams or integration partners to ensure that fit-for-purpose solutions are developed and implemented as per the detailed design and that potential technical issues, or debt are resolved or escalated early
    - Creating, maintaining and improving reusable assets that generalise architectural and design approaches. Ensures that the patterns are 'fit for purpose' to be used by delivery projects
    - Ensuring that the solution components of projects are aligned to Sainsbury's Technology Standards and Patterns and the Sainsbury's IT Roadmap through ongoing Design Authority engagement and appropriate document reviews
  • Be a recognised domain (application, technical, data, business, operations or security) architect with overall accountability for the following in area of expertise:
    - Developing and maintaining relevant parts of the Enterprise Architecture, in alignment to, and whilst improving upon associated principles, patterns and standards. Where relevant this is using our chosen EA tool (Mega HOPEX)
    - Contribute to, and drive the adoption of principles, patterns, standards and guidelines that direct the selection, development, implementation and use of technology across the company
    - Identification of, and assessment of new and emerging technologies, communicating these to the broader team
  • Supports and champions the adoption of the architecture principles and standards across the IT Division and the Business

  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the main technology base, and a general understanding of the other technology bases which together form the overall technical direction
  • Keeps abreast with developments in the IT industry and retail market space to ensure that the architectures are kept in line with industry standard and only deviate for commercial benefit
  • Proven track record and experience as a recognised solution architect on major programs of work
  • Recognised Professional Certification such as BCS or IEE certification and Architectural recognition form an external body such as TOGAF or the BCS is desirable
  • Significant experience of designing solutions that operate on the core technologies in use within Sainsbury's
  • Proven ability to deliver flexible, reliable, supportable, cost effective (packaged and bespoke) IT solutions both in traditional Waterfall and Agile environments
  • Demonstrable experience in IT Industry standards, services, design, architecture principles design, architecture views and viewpoint design, building block design, solutions modelling and systems behaviour
  • Experience of IT Architecture (and underlying frameworks such as TOGAF) including the development (and ensuring adherence to) Architecture principles and standards
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the IT and retail marketplace & trends
  • Proficient in methods and techniques for structured reviews, including reviews of non-functional requirements, technical documents, test plans, business cases and other key deliverables
